As I was hauling the board fleet out of the rack the other night, I started wondering what other people do for waxing their skis (besides the obvious "take them to Schaffner" solution). Am I so old school that I'm the only one waxing my own skis these days? If not, what do other people use?

For probably the last 10+ years I've been using Toko Universal, usually layered with Swix F4 (paste) on top. This seems to work pretty well, although on a sub-zero day at Mammoth last season *everything* was sticking.

This year, I discovered that Hertel is still in business so I got some of their waxes and I'm eager to try them and see if they work as well as I remembered. Either way, it's certainly a lot easier than messing around with colored waxes and mixing, especially if you ski big mountains a lot where the conditions can change dramatically from top to bottom of the same run.

And speaking of Jim, has anybody ever considered making their own "hot box" for waxing skis?

Discuss... :D

I've been using some universal pink wax that is so old I've forgotten what it is. I bought a huge tub of 4 giant bars of wax from one of the online stores (e.g. Reliable Racing or Tognar). I usually get a pro tune on my gear once a season, but do my own wax and edge touch ups throughout the season. In between wax jobs, I also use Zardoz Not Wax to extend the life of the wax job. At the end of the season, I put on a heavy coat of wax and slop it over the edges to keep them free from rust over the summer. For some reason I seem to have a huge (cough) "rust" problem when I don't do this.

I have used Toko waxes for 10 years and have been impressed with the glide and durability from the product. check out this link for the science http://www.toko.ch/toko/waxalpine.asp?sid=2
