I'm getting a VIO POV-1 helmet camera. Does anybody have experience with these? What's the best way to mount one to my helmet? Is an inside jacket pocket a good choice for the recorder, or should I look for a small pack?
The specs/features look good, and I figure it they're good enough for TGR they'll probably stand up to anything I can come up with!

I have not used a helmet cam, but I've been looking a lot.
The accessories page (http://www.vio-pov.com/allproducts.php?pr=&xc=0&login=&mem=&xid=3e8cfbe8f2e57b1dcebc97a786b0911f&ct=di#povacc)at vio lists different kinds of mounts you can use. "Best" depends on your needs. I'd be tempted to start with the universal mount and the headband mount. I was planning on using an inside jacket pocket for the recorder.

Here's 30 seconds of semi-raw footage taken at Deer Valley several weeks ago. The day was overcast, but I think the stuff came out fairly well.

I'm not sure if the camera was moving on the helmet, the helmet was moving on my head, or my head was just moving in general. Sure was fun though! I'd also bet that on a brighter day there would be more definition to the snow surface as well.

Whether 'tis nobler to make larger radius turns where one's head will not always orient straight down the trail or tis nobler to make shorter radius turns where it will be harder to keep the camera steady. Ay, there's the rub that explains why powder helmet cam footage turns out so much nicer.

OK, Windows Movie Maker leaves a lot to be desired but at least it works. Here's the first fruit of my labor!

Anybody know of any better programs? The dissolve at around the 1:30 mark looks a lot better before exporting the movie, for example...
More to come!

Hmm... How about now? (Hey! How come I can't embed smileys any more?) This was from footage I shot @ the convention, during a clinic called Video Shootout where Dave Hawtrey was taking video of us for later viewing. Seemed somehow appropriate... Check it out right around the 2:40 mark, the skiing synched up perfectly with the music! I wish I could take credit for that, but it just worked out that way.

I have several more of these. These two were the 3rd and 4th I did, the first two need to have their credits re-done. These probably take about 4 - 6 hours to do. Anybody want to pay me big $$$ to quit my regular job and do this for a living??? <grin>

This one came from Chris' "Have More Fun" article in Ski magazine this past season.

Hmmmm... There's an idea for a project, turning all 10 of Chris' "Have More Fun" tips into videos! One down, nine to go!

Carl,
Can you make a version of that with time speeded up? I remember seeing a "late for work" video where a guy was speeding through traffic that was "sped up". The effect is pretty cool when there are near misses.

The chairlift ride in "Park-n-Fly" was double-speed. I'll give it a shot. Should be pretty funny!
