I need another pair of skis. OK, I don't need another pair of skis, I want another pair of skis. A firm disciple of the "one pair isn't enough" school of quiver management, I think I have a gap that needs to be filled. I have SL and GS race skis, ~66mm underfoot; twin-tips @ 81mm underfoot (Dynastar TroubleMakers); mild fat Rossi B3 @ 83mm underfoot; and pretty fat Volkl Mantras @ 96mm underfoot. There's nothing in the mid-70mm area for waist width! The twins don't really carve hardpack that well, and neither do the B3s, nor are they particularly adept in the bumps. I think I need something I can cruise around with when skiing with Cheryl at less-than-mach speeds (which lets out the race boards) with the potential to handle bumps, easy trees, etc. Several Volkl models look kind of promising: the Tigershark 10 foot (73mm) and the AC20 (74mm). The older Rossi B2 might have been a nice choice but they've been replaced. Is it worth it for me to look into this, or just stick with what I have and use the twins for "all around" skis? Of course, gearhead that I am, I'll pretty much take any halfway reasonable excuse to add to the collection...

I have an old pair of 174 Rossi B2s still in the plastic, plus bindings.

Carl, i have a perfect ski for what you need. The Fischer Progressor 170cm 70mm underfoot, wood core! Still in plastic this years, wholesale price around $450. I can have them in the NASTC office if you want to look.

Interesting idea Chris, how do those work for off-piste skiing? The waist seems a bit narrower than I'd like (and shorter, too), but I'd need to ski them to see how they do. According to their marketing blurbs online, the Progressor seems more for groomed run skiing (and my Racetiger skis work fantastically for that). Plus, I probably won't be getting to Tahoe before the end of January...

On the other hand, I seem to be pretty adaptable to different skis (or just too dumb to tell the difference) ... :D The only ski I ever rode that I really, really didn't like was the Olin VTC and that was a long time ago.
