| A
little taste of Portillo
By Jenny Fellows
The dates of the trip are August 15-25, we spend from Saturday Aug
16 to Saturday, Aug 23 at Portillo, followed by one night in Santiago
with an excursion of the city. The 15th and 25th are travel days (these
are the dates we will depart from and arrive in the U.S).
Portillo is a private resort that entertains a limited number of guests
per week. This guarantees uncrowded slopes and lots of fresh
snow to ski. The resort is self-contained within Hotel Portillo which
houses not only accommodations but a world class restaurant, bar, movie
theatre, disco, gymnasium, swimming pool, sauna, hot tubs and spa.
We spend full days out on the hill. A typical day includes a stretching
session before breakfast (optional), a breakfast buffet
then skiing/training until lunch followed by more skiing/training until
the end of the day. Once back at the hotel we have "Onces"
Chilean tea-time, followed by a video review session and a tech talk.
Before dinner everyone relaxes, some go to the bar where they
have a pisco sour or two, or to the spa for a massage or sauna. There
are often pick-up basketball or "futbol" games. We
host an annual Ping Pong tournament, which is a lot of fun to spectate
or participate in - Jenny Fellows is the current
champion! Dinner is a wonderful 3 course meal with the entire group
at one table, where the stories and laughter flow readily. After dinner
some of the group heads down to the disco for a taste of the Portillo
nightlife.
The groups are flexible and arranged according to level with no more
than six people per group. There is also an option to go heli-skiing
during the week. Everyone who joins the NASTC camp generally has a goal
of improving their skiing but they also wants to have LOTS of
fun! The NASTC group is always full of laughter and has a very relaxed
environment. We know the staff and the mountain very well as
we have been running camps at Portillo for 14yrs. The trip is completed
with a one night stay in a 4 star hotel in Santiago with an
excursion of the city. This is a great opportunity to visit historic
and picturesque neighborhoods such as Bellavista where Pablo Neruda
lived for some time. We guarantee that not only will you see big improvements
in your skiing but you will have a GREAT time on and off
the slopes, for Portillo is truly a magical place.
